Cambodia's Most Amazing Hidden Ruins

Koh Ker

Description: The rival of Angkor, overlooking a cliff. Location: North Preah Vihear Province.

Top Ten Hidden Ruins

Beng Mealea
More than any other temple in Cambodia, Beng Mealea looks like a set for an Indiana Jones film. Thick jungle surrounds and engulfs the structure. Roots lift causeways off the ground and strangle towers.

Phnom Banan
Located in a scenic area just outside of the city of Battambang, Phnom Banan consists of ancient mountain top ruins and an interesting modern pagoda at the base of the mountain.

Banteay Chhmar
For years, this isolated and overgrown temple near the Thai border was attacked by looters. A testament to the destructive result of demand by private collectors, little remains of the wonderful artwork that once adorned this temple but for headless figures and chiseled out indentations where carvings once were. Much of the temple is collapsed in on itself and there is little reason to visit save for the interest in seeing the combined effects of man and nature on what was once a magnificent structure.

Bakan
A vast and overgrown temple complex located in a remote region of Cambodia.

Phnom Da and Angkor Borei
A prehistoric site uncommon in the tropics of Cambodia, getting to Angkor Borei Phnom Da may be more interesting than the site itself. Located in the middle of a vast flood plain, these sites can be reached by boat passing through rice field canals in the wet season. Evidence has been unearthed here of human habitation dating back thousands of years, including human skulls and tools.
