Top Ten Hidden Ruins

Phnom Chisor
Truly something different, the 8th century temple of Phnom Chisor is built atop a mountain that rises 430 feet above the surrounding rice fields. The mountain top is shared by the ancient pre-Angkorian site as well as a functional Buddhist pagoda. After a fifteen minute climb up a steep staircase, you will be rewarded with a view of the Cambodian countryside and rice fields in all directions from the ancient site.

River of a Thousand Lingas
Kbal Spean, or the River of a Thousand Lingas, requires a tough 45-minute hike up a mountain path through thick jungle. It is a rewarding hike, however. A small clear stream flows through and over the many stone lingas, representations of the male organ, carved into the stone stream bed. The water cascades over these and other intricate carvings before plummeting over a cliff in a scenic waterfall. Located one hour north of Siem Reap, the hike is best combined with a visit to the famed pink sandstone temple of Banteay Srei, or citadel of Women, located about 20 minutes before the base of the mountain.

Sambor Prei Kuk
An ancient lost city spread over many miles of thick jungle, Sambor Prei Kuk may just satiate your appetite for temples and jungles alike. You will need to cover many miles of jungle paths so see all of this lost city, yet you may be the only one there. Weathered and worn, the laterite and brick structures of this lost city lack the impressive towers and gates of Angkor, but still manage to hold some charm as evidence of the amazing city that once stood where there is now nothing but jungle for miles in all directions. Located about one hour north of Kompong Thom, the halfway point between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, Sambor Prei Kuk can be visited in a day trip from Kompong Thom or en route to Tbeng Meanchey (and Preah Vihear or Koh Ker).
